User Reviews

First, let me establish my credentials to rate this item. I've owned and used 3 harmony remotes over the years, and have learned enough about their (counter?) intitutive software to know my way around their systems.

I purhcased the Harmony One in April, and, after a few attempts at set up, got it down.

Now, however, in August, the reverse button has failed to work on any device.

Reinstalling and upgrading the software in general make no difference.

The issue I have is how their support system seems to be set up to frustrate warrenty claims.

After figuring out that I had to make a warrenty claim from within the remote software (NOT online), I was offered an incident number and then it was offered that I call to disucss.

When I call, they tell me my incident does not allow me to talk with anyone!

Now I have a $175 brick that partially functions and can't get anyone on the line.

Time to move to another provider! -- Another Support Horror Story
Other reviewers have articulated this remote's many positive features. And there are many. Were it not for its few but significant shortcomings, it would warrant an easy 5-star rating for me. Still I do use the Harmony One instead of my other remotes 95% of the time. That being said, let me point out some details that Harmony could revise in future remotes that I think would please most users, especially those of us who are older.

1. While black may be the color of the day in electronics, it makes the buttons of this remote less easy to visually distinguish from the background surface. Shadows are by definition dark. Unlike remotes of a lighter color, such as the DirecTV RC64R remote, the individual buttons of the Harmony One cast shadows on a black background. I wish Logitech had produced the One with a lighter-colored surface.

2. Shiny surfaces look cool, but light reflections make the printed words or symbols on the buttons more difficult to read. I wish Logitech had used a non-reflectice surface surrounding the buttons.

3. It is clear that Logitech didn't beta-test this remote with the over-60 crowd. A slight decrease in the space between buttons and a slight increase in button size and print size would have made the buttons easier to read without resorting to reading glasses.

4. One reviewer referred to the Harmony One as slick. And slick it is! It slips out of your hand more easily than the DirecTV remote mentioned above. Though a bit heavier and thicker, the DirecTV remote is much easier to grasp and retain in hand. It only slips out of my hand when I'm eating some great New York style pizza!

5. The Harmony One separates the remote into areas of buttons with related functions. I wish those thin silver lines that separate the areas were also back-lit. Again, it would have made the remote easier to navigate in low light conditions.

6. When compared to the DirecTV remote, the choice of the up, down, left, right buttons that border the OK button makes them less easy to use than the arrangement on the DirecTV remote.

7. I am less impressed with the utility of the screen than others seem to be. The six screen "buttons" are a better fit for slender fingers than larger ones. When tapping the lower right button, I end up hitting the "device" bar more often than I would like. Using four buttons instead of six would have been more to my liking, but this is more of a personal preference. In fairness to Logitech, you can just program only the top four buttons and resolve this issue.

8. Does anyone use the number buttons very often. I don't, so I wish Logitech (and the other remote manufacturers) would have made them as horizontal elongated buttons like the Guide and Info buttons. That would have saved space and enabled more function buttons such as a Last or Previous Channel button that the Harmony One lacks (at least I haven't found it yet). Of course, I can and have programmed a custom button for the screen for that purpose.

So, with all these complaints and recommendations, why did I give the remote 4 stars? Because it is difficult to harbor a grudge against a universal remote. I'm glad I don't have to use four remotes all the time (DirecTV DVR, Panasonic BD70V Blu-Ray & VHS player, Denon AVR-3310CI receiver, Pioneer 151FD plasma TV). One is better... but as configured, NOT best. The online programming takes a bit of time to get used to but is great. -- If only it had/was ...
The short answer.
The Help button feature is the only thing that makes this devise usable. Turning the individual components on when watching the TV is not always seamless. Sometimes everything comes on when they are supposed to and sometimes they don't turn on at all. The same is true when turning things off.
Sometimes my preset favorite channels come on and some times not. Station 209 my result in station 24. The remote just doesn't recognize the correct order of the numbers or seems to leave some numbers out. This is a constant problem. The remote is better than having the four remotes I had to use before but it is somewhat annoying when it does not function as advertised. For the price I expected better.
-- And the answer is! Not so harmonious.
I have to say I'm pretty sad that I didn't have more time to play with the features that this remote provides. Within two programming sessions I was done with all my configurations. The second session was to enable a Wii game console.

It's true that the Wii does not have a remote feature but my 9 yr old grandson figured it out within a couple of minutes (just turn "ON" the Wii and press "play games" on the Logitech.

My wife, who is a self-proclaimed non-techie, threw away her notes on how to sequence the five controls to achieve the desired results. It used to be "interesting" to watch her work through the different scenarios saying "Don't tell me I know I've done this before!" With this remote most of her frustration has gone away. Her new frustration is learning the new remote, but I have not seen her make any notes yet. Perhaps this is a good sign! -- Setup was really easy
My Harmony 880 died after 3 years of service. This remote feels much more solid than the 880 from the remote itself to the cradle in which it sits. Logitech's software makes setup a breeze--punch in the model #s of the equipment you've got, note the inputs on your receiver, update the remote and you're off to the races. If you're replacing a prior harmony product, the software can copy your settings to your new remote.

This device makes it a snap to enjoy your entertainment system. Get it! 5 minutes ago! -- Great replacement for Harmony 880

Sony Corp., trying to reverse sales declines in its TV division, will announce home-entertainment devices next month that use Intel Corp. chips and Google Inc. software, said two people familiar with the matter. The companies plan to discuss the new products at a conference sponsored by Google in San Francisco on May 19 and May 20, said the people, who asked not to be identified because details are still being worked out. Intel is contributing a customized version of its Atom chip that will run a new version of Google’s Android operating system called Dragonpoint.

I've had really good luck with the Kodak 2500MAh batteries on my Xbox 360. Batteries last about a month with regular use. I think anything with 2500MAh or better rating is sufficient for decent use with a gaming controller. Especially with Wii using Bluetooth which has low power consumption by design.

I will have the Harmony One within 24 hours. I bought it (OK, a gift from the g/f) because of the rave pro and user reviews. Cnet gave it the Editor's Choice award.

I can't seem to find anything on the 720. It appears Logitech disowned it.

There is a link on the bottom right side of the XBOX.com page that is called Feedback. You can use this to tell them thanks. It says that it is for supprt.xbox.com, but you can leave a typed messge that indicates that it is actually for the guys and gals in Texas that work so hard to make some very upset people happy again.

It's a 2 hour movie.
I think they're showing the same movie 3 times back to back.
Not 3 different parts.
